Paarl Royals’ star player, Fabian Allen, encountered a harrowing incident as he was subjected to a gunpoint robbery on the evening of February 5.

This distressing event took place in Johannesburg, just days before the team’s crucial Eliminator fixture against Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 2024 playoffs.

Allen, who has been a key contributor to the Paarl Royals franchise during the ongoing season, became the unfortunate victim outside the Sandton Sun hotel.

The incident transpired a mere day after the conclusion of the Royals’ final league game against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

According to reliable sources, several assailants armed with guns confronted Allen, forcibly snatching away his phone, a bag, and other personal belongings. The incident raises concerns about the safety of athletes, especially in a foreign country.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) promptly confirmed the incident and assured Allen’s well-being. The governing body has established contact with the 28-year-old cricketer, emphasizing his physical safety amidst the traumatic experience.

Despite the distressing situation, it is reported that Fabian Allen remains unharmed, offering a sigh of relief to the cricketing community. The incident has sparked discussions about the security measures in place for athletes participating in international tournaments.

Fabian Allen’s notable performances on the field, including the remarkable display against Joburg Super Kings on January 24, where he played a crucial role in securing a thrilling victory for Paarl Royals, add a layer of irony to this unfortunate off-field incident.

Paarl Royals’ management has remained tight-lipped about the incident. Efforts to seek clarification from the franchise were unsuccessful, leaving fans and followers in suspense regarding the details of the robbery.

The SA20 league spokesperson, in response to inquiries, neither confirmed nor denied the incident but maintained silence on the specifics. This lack of transparency raises questions about the communication channels and the need for a more open dialogue between the cricketing fraternity and the concerned authorities.

As the unsettling news surfaces, Paarl Royals, one of the four franchises qualified for the playoffs, prepares to face Joburg Super Kings in the Eliminator showdown on February 7 at the iconic Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
