Rohit Sharma has announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket, just weeks before India’s high-profile five-match series in England.

The 38-year-old, who has been a mainstay in the Indian Test side and led the team to several significant milestones, made his decision public on May 7, 2025, ending widespread speculation about his future in the longest format.

    End of an Era

Rohit Sharma retires as one of India’s most prolific Test batters in recent years, amassing 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties with highest score of 212 in his test career.

His leadership saw India reach the World Test Championship final against Australia and navigate challenging series against New Zealand and Australia.

Despite his achievements, recent struggles with form and India’s disappointing run of five losses in the last six Tests under his captaincy contributed to mounting pressure and calls for change.

    Selection Committee’s Role

Rohit’s announcement comes in the wake of reports that the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee had decided to remove him as Test captain for the England tour, citing his recent red-ball form rather than age as the primary reason.

The selectors, aiming to groom a new leader for the next World Test Championship cycle, had already informed the BCCI of their decision, with names like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant emerging as potential successors.

    Rohit’s Statement and Future

In his retirement statement, Rohit expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent India in whites, calling it “an absolute honour,” and confirmed he will continue to play in the ODI format.

His departure marks a significant transition for the Indian Test team as they embark on the England tour, starting June 20, with a new captain at the helm.

    What’s Next for Team India?

With Rohit stepping down, the BCCI will soon announce a new Test captain and squad for the England series, signaling a new era for Indian red-ball cricket.

The selectors’ decision reflects a clear intent to build for the future after a period of mixed results and to inject fresh leadership into the side as the new World Test Championship cycle begins.
