Kraigg Brathwaite has officially stepped down as the captain of the West Indies Test team, as announced by Cricket West Indies (CWI) on March 31, 2025.
Brathwaite’s resignation comes ahead of the upcoming home series against Australia, allowing for a smooth transition to new leadership.
In conjunction with this change, Shai Hope has been appointed as the new captain of the T20I side, succeeding Rovman Powell, who has led the T20 team since 2023.
Brathwaite’s Tenure and Achievements
Kraigg Brathwaite, aged 32, took over the Test captaincy in March 2021 and has since led the team in 39 Test matches, achieving ten victories and enduring 22 losses.
His tenure is marked by several historic achievements, including guiding the West Indies to their first Test victory in Australia in 27 years with a thrilling eight-run win at the Gabba in January 2024.
Additionally, Brathwaite’s leadership saw the team secure a memorable draw in a recent series against Pakistan and a home series win over England in 2022.
Brathwaite expressed his desire to ensure a period of transition for the team before his departure.
He indicated his intention to step down earlier this year, allowing CWI ample time to prepare for the future.
The upcoming series against Australia will be particularly special for Brathwaite as he approaches his 100th Test match, providing him an opportunity to focus on his batting without the added pressure of captaincy.
CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe praised Brathwaite’s contributions, stating, “Kraigg has been an outstanding leader for our Test team, guiding the squad with discipline and resilience. His contributions have been invaluable, and under his leadership, we have witnessed historic moments that will be remembered for years to come.”
Shai Hope Takes Charge of T20I Team
In a related development, Shai Hope has been appointed as the captain of the T20I team while continuing his role as the ODI captain.
At 31 years old, Hope brings experience and leadership skills to the T20 format after previously leading the ODI side effectively.
His appointment follows discussions with head coach Daren Sammy, who emphasized Hope’s potential to lead the T20I squad successfully.
Hope replaces Rovman Powell, who has been at the helm of the T20I side since May 2023.
Under Powell’s leadership, West Indies secured notable victories against major teams and participated in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 co-hosted by the West Indies.
Bascombe acknowledged Powell’s contributions, stating that he should feel dignified by his role in elevating the T20 team to new heights.
He expressed gratitude for Powell’s efforts and highlighted that his leadership laid a strong foundation for future success.
