In a disappointing turn of events for Sri Lanka’s cricket fans, the gifted spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will not be gracing the ODI World Cup 2023 stage.
Hasaranga’s participation in the prestigious cricket extravaganza, set to take place in India, has been hindered by a troublesome hamstring tear.
Sri Lanka Cricket now faces a ticking clock with just four days left to unveil Hasaranga’s replacement, as all final World Cup squads are mandated to be submitted by September 28.
This isn’t the first time the cricket sensation has been sidelined due to the same injury, as he missed out on participating in the recently concluded Asia Cup as well.
The last glimpse of Hasaranga in action was during his stint in the Lanka Premier League, where he captained the B Kandy Love team.
During the thrilling Lanka Premier League showdown, he not only emerged as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with an impressive tally of 279 runs but also proved his mettle as the leading wicket-taker with a remarkable haul of 19 wickets.
As Sri Lanka gears up for the ODI World Cup, their campaign is set to kick off on October 7, where they will face a formidable challenge in their first match against South Africa.
The absence of Hasaranga will undoubtedly be felt, but Sri Lanka will strive to make their mark on the tournament despite this setback.
