Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, but emerging reports reveal that the decision was rooted in deep-seated dissatisfaction with the Indian team management and a perceived lack of freedom within the current setup.

    Key Reasons Behind Kohli’s Retirement

Kohli was reportedly eager to lead India in the upcoming Test series against England, aiming to anchor the team through a transition phase.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to hand over the captaincy to a younger player as part of a new World Test Championship cycle, signaling a clear shift in leadership strategy.

Multiple reports indicate that Kohli felt constrained by the current team environment and management. He believed he was not getting the freedom, environment, or energy required to perform at his best and reignite his passion for the format.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif suggested that Kohli’s decision was influenced by a lack of support from the BCCI and selectors.

Kaif believes that internal discussions and doubts over Kohli’s form and place in the team contributed to his exit, despite Kohli’s demonstrated interest in continuing his Test career.

Before finalizing his retirement, Kohli reportedly spoke with several senior figures, including former coach Ravi Shastri, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. A planned meeting with BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla did not materialize due to scheduling conflicts.

    Timeline and Context

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, just ahead of India’s five-match Test series in England.

The decision came shortly after Rohit Sharma, another senior player, also retired from Tests, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket’s most successful batting duo.

Kohli’s Test career spanned 123 matches, in which he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

    What Lies Ahead for Kohli?

Kohli is expected to continue playing in limited-overs formats, focusing on ODIs as India builds towards the 2027 World Cup.

His Test retirement, however, underscores ongoing tensions between senior players and the current Indian management and raises questions about the BCCI’s approach to handling transitions and legends of the game.
