Battlegrounds Mobile India was banned in July 2022 by the Indian government. Prior to this, games like PUBG Mobile were banned due to ongoing conflict with China and fears of breach of security. BGMI was thus introduced as the Indian alternative for PUBG Mobile. The gameplay was also modified to better suit the Indian audience.
However, BGMI met the same fate as PUBG Mobile and the government banned the game citing Section 69A of the IT Act. This section authorizes the government to restrict access to any content that threatens the security of the nation.
This section was enforced most likely due to the links of the developer of the game Krafton, to China. The official return date of BGMI is yet to be announced.
