In what was a show of absolute domination, NorthEast United FC steamrolled past Diamond Harbour FC 6-1 in the finals of the Durand Cup 2025. All hell broke loose at the Salt Lake Stadium as Diamond Harbour’s horror defence show was at the forefront.
The Highlanders have now clinched back-to-back titles in the Durand Cup and are a force to reckon with. A total of 6 different players found their names on the goal-scoring sheet at the Salt Lake Stadium on 23rd August 2025.
Asheer Akhtar and Parthib Gogoi had scored for The Highlanders in the 1st half and NorthEast United FC. They were 2-0 up and ahead at the break and then they pumped 4 more goals in the second half.
Thoi Singh, Jairo Samperio, Andres Rodriguez and Alaaeddine Ajaraie scored goals in the 2nd half to help the defending champions defend their title. It was a spectacular show by The Highlanders and they will remember this victory for a long time.
NorthEast United had a phenomenal all-round performance
Be it the defence or the forwards, The Highlanders put up a solid show in the Durand Cup 2025 finals. The only goal from Kibu Vicuna and co. came in the 65th minute of the game through Luka Majcen.
But it was futile as NorthEast United FC were well and truly in the driver’s seat of the game. They become the first team to win back-to-back Durand Cup titles in 34 years. East Bengal FC had last won a hat-trick of Durand Cup titles in 1989, 1990 and 1991.
Diamond Harbour FC had earlier caused massive upsets in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup. They beat Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal FC in the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, respectively.
But the side that has been having a dream run in Indian Football, failed to impress on the big stage and faltered at the hands of a resolute and spirited NorthEast United FC.
