In a shocking news, former Manchester United legendary footballer, Wayne Rooney, has been sacked as the manager of Birmingham City. Notably, he was at the helm for only 83 days and couldn’t bring the results which the co-owners and the CEO of Birmingham City wanted.
Rooney assumed the managerial position on 11th October 2023 after John Eustace was ousted from this position. Birmingham City were in the 6th position in the points table of the EFL Championship 2023-24.
Post his dismissal, Birmingham City have endured a major slump in form and are now in the 20th position in the points table. Only 4 teams in the form of Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday, QPR and Rotherham are below The Blues in the points table.
Wayne Rooney was at the helm for only 15 games and this proves that the decision was taken in haste. He had a three-and-a-half-year deal with Birmingham City and the contract has now been terminated.
In the 15 matches he has been the manager, Birmingham City have lost the plot on 9 occasions. Their shambolic performances have forced the management to jump into such a shocking decision.
“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club,” Wayne Rooney said after his dismissal.
“Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed,” he added.
Rooney also stated that this would take a while to “get over this setback”. He said that he will be away from football for a while.
“Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager,” said Rooney.
