Turkey suffered a devastating and heart-wrenching earthquake that left thousands of people dead. The earthquake also affected Syria and the conditions remained fatal as well. During this process, a former Chelsea and Ghana footballer Christian Atsu has been reportedly been missing under the rumble.

“There is no information on his whereabouts yet, we don’t know where he is. It’s not the case that he was pulled out or taken anywhere else,” said Hatayspor director Volkan Demirel to Reuters.

During the pre-dawn hours of Monday, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria and reportedly, 16,000 people are dead. This is one of the worst earthquakes to have hit these two countries in recent times and the death toll keeps rising every day.

Who is Christian Atsu?

Christian Atsu is a Ghanaian footballer who presently plies his trade for Turkish Super Lig club Hatayspor. He is an attacking midfielder and winger. Atsu’s primary role is to play as a winger.

The 31-year-old footballer was a part of Chelsea from 2013-2017 and was loaned out to different clubs. He went to Newcastle United in 2016 on loan and played 32 games for them, scoring 5 goals.

He was later bought permanently by The Magpies and he played for them from 2017-2021. Christian Atsu played 75 matches for them and netted 3 goals for them.

Christian Atsu has played 65 matches for the Ghana national football team and netted 9 goals for his country. His battles down the wings and his ability to whip in successful crosses earned him a lot of reputation in Ghana as a footballer.

Atsu also represented Al-Raed, Everton, Malaga, and Porto. Notably, he started his club career in Porto in 2011.

According to the Turkish authorities, more than 3,700 buildings have been damaged in this gut-wrenching earthquake. Kahramanmaras is the epicentre of this earthquake. The waves of this earthquake were also felt in Egypt.
