The Indian Premier League (IPL) is not just a cricket tournament; it’s a grand celebration of sports, talent, and entertainment.
As we gear up for the IPL 2025 auction, cricket fans are excited about the new rules shaping the upcoming season.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the rules for the IPL 2025 auction.
With changes to IPL 2025 player retention, salary caps, and auction strategies, the BCCI aims to create a more dynamic and competitive environment.
Here are the key components of the new regulations:
IPL 2025 Retention Policy
- Maximum Retentions: Each of the ten franchises can retain up to six players from their existing squads. This includes one uncapped player, which is a new requirement aimed at promoting local talent.
- Right-to-Match (RTM): Teams will have one RTM card available, allowing them to retain a player by matching the highest bid during the auction. This card can be used alongside direct retention options.
- Uncapped Player Rule: Players who have not participated in international matches for at least five years will be classified as uncapped, allowing teams to retain seasoned players like MS Dhoni at a lower cost of ₹4 crore.
IPL 2025 Auction Purse
- Increased Auction Purse: Each franchise will have an auction purse of ₹120 crore, which is an increase from ₹100 crore in the previous season.
- Match Fees: Players will earn a fixed match fee of ₹7.5 lakh per game. A player participating in all matches could earn approximately ₹1.05 crore from match fees alone.
- Salary Cap Structure: The total salary cap now includes the auction purse, incremental performance pay, and match fees, bringing the total to about ₹146 crore for 2025.
IPL 2025 Retention Costs
The costs associated with retaining players are structured as follows:
Retention Number | Cost (₹ crore) |
1st | 18 |
2nd | 14 |
3rd | 11 |
4th | 18 |
5th | 14 |
If a franchise opts to retain five players, it will incur a total deduction of ₹75 crore from its auction purse, leaving only ₹45 crore for acquiring additional players during the auction.
IPL 2025 Rules & Regulations
- Overseas Player Regulations: The BCCI is considering imposing a two-year ban on overseas players who withdraw after being selected in the auction. This aims to ensure commitment from international stars and maintain competitive integrity within the league.
- IPL 2025 Auction Timing and Venue: The IPL 2025 auction is tentatively scheduled for either the second week of November or the third week of December, with Abu Dhabi as a likely venue following last year’s successful overseas auction in Dubai.
