As the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) prepare for the IPL 2025 season, several significant challenges loom over the franchise.
After a disappointing seventh-place finish in IPL 2024, LSG made bold moves in the auction, including acquiring Rishabh Pant for a record ₹27 crore.
However, this decision has also brought about new concerns. Here are three major issues that LSG must address as they head into the new season.
1. Injury Concerns Among Key Pacers
One of the most pressing issues for LSG is the fitness of their primary fast bowlers. Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan are all currently recovering from injuries and are awaiting clearance from the BCCI’s medical team.
This situation poses a significant threat to LSG’s bowling attack, particularly in the early stages of the tournament.
To mitigate this issue, LSG has reportedly considered signing Shardul Thakur as a replacement for Mohsin Khan, but this last-minute change may not provide the stability needed in their bowling lineup.
2. Lack of a Proven Opening Pair
With KL Rahul’s departure from the franchise, LSG faces uncertainty at the top of their batting order.
The team lacks a specialist Indian opener, which could hinder their ability to set solid foundations in matches.
This gap in their batting lineup raises concerns about whether LSG can effectively compete against teams with strong opening partnerships.
3. Weakness in the Spin Department
While LSG boasts a powerful batting lineup, their spin department remains a significant concern.
Ravi Bishnoi is expected to lead the spin attack but struggled during IPL 2024, conceding runs at an average of 8.77 per over while taking only 10 wickets in 14 matches.
Additionally, players like Shahbaz Ahmed have not proven themselves consistently effective in either batting or bowling roles, further exacerbating this weakness.
