MS Dhoni IPL 2026 Retirement

The IPL 2025 league stage is about to be completed, and the speculation about MS Dhoni’s future has intensified.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend, who captained the side in the absence of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, kept fans guessing about whether he will continue playing in IPL 2026.

While Dhoni has hinted that retirement is a possibility, several factors suggest he might not hang up his gloves just yet.

Here are three key reasons why MS Dhoni might not retire ahead of IPL 2026.

1. Dhoni Has the Luxury of Time to Decide

MS Dhoni has repeatedly emphasized that he is in no rush to decide on his retirement.

Speaking after CSK’s final IPL 2025 game, Dhoni revealed he has “four to five months” to decide whether to continue playing.

He stressed the importance of assessing his body’s fitness and hunger to compete at the highest level before making a call.

Dhoni said, “It depends. I have 4-5 months to decide, there’s no hurry. Every year, it takes 15-50% more effort to keep the body fit. It’s professional cricket, and you have to be at your best.” This measured approach indicates that Dhoni is keeping his options open and will base his decision on how well he can prepare physically and mentally for the next season.

2. The Fire to Compete Still Burns Bright

Despite being 43 and in the “last stage” of his career, Dhoni’s passion for the game remains strong.

Former teammate Robin Uthappa highlighted that Dhoni’s desire to play and win championships is undiminished, but his participation will depend largely on his fitness and ability to maintain his body between seasons.

Uthappa explained, “The fire still burns to win championships, to play out there in the middle. Now it’s about going back and working on his body to bring it to the level he wants for the next IPL.”

Dhoni himself acknowledged the challenges of staying fit but made it clear that his motivation to compete remains high.

3. Leadership Role and Team Needs

Dhoni stepped in as CSK captain midway through IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, demonstrating his continued value as a leader and mentor.

With CSK finishing at the bottom of the points table for the first time, the franchise may rely on Dhoni’s experience and calm presence to guide a rebuilding side in IPL 2026.

Moreover, Dhoni’s role extends beyond just batting and wicketkeeping; his leadership and tactical acumen are invaluable assets.

The team management’s trust in him to lead under challenging circumstances suggests that Dhoni’s involvement in the next season could be crucial, whether as a player or in a mentoring capacity.
