5-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) had an abysmal IPL 2022 season and they finished with the wooden spoon. Nearly nothing went right for Rohit Sharma’s side as they managed to muster only 4 wins in 14 games.

In the recently-concluded IPL 2023 auction, Mumbai went all-out to secure the services of Australian all-rounder Cameron Green for a whopping amount of Rs. 17.5 crores. Green became the second-highest sold cricketer in the history of IPL auctions after this transaction. With the likes of Jofra Archer, Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrah and Surya Kumar Yadav in their side, Mumbai come into the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the IPL 2023 title.

The opening combination will be extremely important for MI as if they get off to a flyer in the powerplay, majority of the job is already done for Rohit Sharma’s team. In this article, we take a look at 3 opening combinations Mumbai Indians can try for IPL 2023:

1. Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians tried this pair in IPL 2022 but the duo failed to provide the breath-taking starts they were expected to make. Skipper Rohit Sharma had a disastrous IPL 2022 and for the first time in his IPL career, he finished with an average less than 20 in the IPL. However, it is expected that the champion franchise sticks with this opening combination in the upcoming edition of IPL.

2. Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green

Imagine if Cameron Green and Ishan Kishan both go berserk in the initial 6 overs. With just 2 fielders inside the 30-yard circle, both these cricketers have the firepower to go all guns blazing. Mumbai Indians can well try this opening combination and make the opposition bowlers quite nervous.

3. Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green

The other opening combination which Mumbai can try out is Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green. In this case, Rohit would have to play the role of an anchor and allow Green to press his feet on the accelerator. Green would then be expected to play freely as Mumbai have a very long and deep batting order.
