Flop XI IPL 2023

Along with the highs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, there are also plenty of lows. As we know that IPL 2023 is known for giving several opportunities to the talented and young cricketers, it also lays bare several glaring areas of concerns of several cricketers.

IPL 2023 saw Gujarat Titans (GT) getting pipped past by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the finals by 5 wickets. CSK added their 5th title and they have a glittering trophy cabinet. Chennai have also won 2 Champions League T20 titles. The tournament doesn’t take place now.

The other two playoff teams included Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI). However, it was the first two teams in the points table after the league stage round, that qualified for the finals of IPL 2023.

In this article, we take a look at the flop XI of IPL 2023, purely based on their performances and stats:

Openers: Prithvi Shaw and Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw will be opening the batting in this flop XI of IPL 2023. Both the Indian batters had lopsided performances in this edition of the Indian Premier League and got out more often than they scored impactful knocks.

Sharma scored only 332 runs in 16 games and was a big failure with the bat at the top. Prithvi Shaw failed to capitalise on his opportunities and mustered only 106 runs in 8 games.

Top-order: Rahul Tripathi, Manish Pandey and Harry Brook

Two of the most talented IPL batters in the form of Rahul Tripathi and Manish Pandey had forgettable tournaments with the bat. While Rahul Tripathi averaged a paltry 22.75 in IPL 2023, Manish Pandey failed to get his bearings right in the 16th edition of the tournament and amassed only 160 runs.

Harry Brook was purchased at a hefty amount of Rs. 13.25 crores by the Hyderabad franchise and he was a big failure with the bat. Apart from one century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, the English buccaneering batter didn’t leave any lasting impression with the bat.

Middle-order: Dinesh Karthik and Sunil Narine

After a blazing IPL 2022 where he lit up the entire IPL with his knocks, Dinesh Karthik had a forgettable IPL 2023 tournament. The experienced wicket-keeper batter scored only 140 runs in IPL 2023 and had an abysmal average of 11.67 in the tournament.

Sunil Narine started playing well towards the end of IPL 2023 but he was a big disappointment for KKR. He was horrific with the bat and was quite expensive with the ball. Sunil Narine bagged 11 wickets in 14 games and had an expensive average of 34.82.

Bowlers: Jofra Archer, Mukesh Kumar, Umran Malik and Rahul Chahar

Jofra Archer was a big flop in the few matches he played in IPL 2023. After missing the entire IPL 2022 because of an injury, he was set to spearhead the bowling department of Mumbai as Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of IPL 2023 due to an injury.

But the Englishman played only 5 games and managed to pick up only 2 wickets. He was later ruled out once again due to an injury.

The likes of Mukesh Kumar and Umran Malik had high expectations because of their excellent domestic record and previous IPL performances but they failed to prove their mettle in IPL 2023.

Rahul Chahar played all the matches for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in this edition of the IPL but had a horrible tournament. He bagged only 8 wickets in 14 games and was quite expensive with the white-cherry. He would be hoping to stage a solid comeback in the forthcoming edition of the lucrative IPL.
