IPL 2023: Sunrisers Hyderabad End Losing Streak With Spectacular Win Against Delhi Capitals

Sunrisers Hyderabad bounced back from their three consecutive losses by registering a victory against Delhi Capitals in the 40th match of TATA IPL 2023. The game was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer for Sunrisers Hyderabad, displaying an all-round performance with 67 runs off 36 balls and 1/26. He helped SRH win by 9 runs. Heinrich Klaasen also contributed to the victory by providing the finishing touches with a brisk 53 off 27 balls to help SRH post a competitive 197/6.

Mayank Markande delivered an excellent spell of 4-0-20-2, leading the SRH bowlers to bounce back hard and survive Phil Salt’s (59 off 35) and Mitchell Marsh’s (63 off 39) blitzes. This victory ended their three-match losing streak.

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and chose to bat first. Sunrisers Hyderabad got off to a good start with Abhishek Sharma playing some fantastic shots and hitting nine fours in the Powerplay. With their brilliant performance, SRH was 62/2 at the end of the Powerplay. Mayank Agarwal survived an early LBW scare but was eventually caught behind off Ishant Sharma. SRH lost Rahul Tripathi too in the Powerplay, but Abhishek continued his excellent form.

Kuldeep Yadav almost got a wicket in his first over, but Anrich Nortje dropped a catch at long off. Abhishek brought up his fifty with a six over deep mid-wicket. However, DC pulled things back and took a couple of wickets in the middle overs. Mitchell Marsh got the crucial wickets of Aiden Markram and Harry Brook, leaving SRH at 83/4 at the halfway mark.

Abhishek and Heinrich Klaasen tried to keep the momentum going and smashed three fours and a six off Mukesh Kumar’s over. However, Abhishek couldn’t continue his excellent form and was caught in the deep trying to clear long on off Axar Patel. Klaasen and Abdul Samad then put on a 50-run partnership off 32 balls, hitting several fours and sixes. Marsh got his third wicket, dismissing Samad for 28 off 21 balls. However, Klaasen continued his attacking approach and brought up his fifty off just 25 balls, helping SRH reach a score of 197/6. 

When Delhi Capitals chased the 198 runs target, they received a significant blow early in the innings as Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled out captain David Warner off the second ball. However, Phil Salt and Mitchell Marsh hit a flurry of fours and sixes to bring the score to 57/1 at the end of the Powerplay.

Umran Malik’s introduction into the attack did not go as planned as Phil Salt and Mitchell Marsh went on the attack, hitting him for 22 runs in his first over. Marsh continued his six-hitting spree, smashing consecutive pulls off Malik, while Salt added a couple of fours to his tally. Salt reached his maiden IPL fifty in just 29 balls, and Marsh soon followed suit, bringing up his half-century off only 28 deliveries.

As the match progressed, Sunrisers Hyderabad found themselves in dire need of a breakthrough. Fortunately for them, Mayank Markande delivered an incredible caught and bowled effort to dismiss Phil Salt for 59 off 35, ending his 112-run partnership with David Warner. 

SRH capitalized on this success and quickly followed it up with two more wickets. Abhishek Sharma had Manish Pandey stumped in the very next over, while Akeal Hosein caught Mitchell Marsh off a miscued shot at extra cover,

Despite a valiant effort from Axar Patel, DC lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves in trouble with 49 runs needed off the last 18 balls. However, Axar smashed a six and took 14 runs off the 18th over, giving DC a glimmer of hope. 

But Natarajan bowled a brilliant penultimate over, conceding only 9 runs and leaving DC with a daunting task of scoring 35 runs off the final over. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the ball for SRH and held his nerve to help his team seal a hard-fought victory, with DC falling short by 10 runs.
