IPL 2024: 3 Reasons Why Dinesh Karthik Can Retire Post This Edition

Date:

Dinesh Karthik has been one of the most experienced campaigners in the Indian Premier League (IPL). From leading an IPL side to being an explosive finisher, Karthik has witnessed a lot of landmark moments in the IPL and has been through highs and lows.

He is one of the few players to have played every single edition of the IPL since 2008 and is considered as a veteran in the Indian cricketing fraternity and ecosystem. Since IPL 2022, Karthik has been an integral part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) setup and will play a key role in this year’s IPL too.

However, we feel that Dinesh Karthik is in the twilight of his career. There are several signs that Karthik could hang up his boots from this tournament post this edition.

In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why Dinesh Karthik can retire from the IPL post this edition:

1. Age is not on his side

Dinesh Karthik is already 38 and is definitely in the twilight of his career. With age not on his side, we could see Dinesh Karthik retire from the IPL after this edition. Since he is a wicket-keeper as well, his eyesight could take a hit and this could delay the timing of his stumpings.

Plus, a BCCI source had told news agency PTI that Dinesh Karthik might be retiring from IPL post this edition and will take a call about his international retirement too after the end of this sojourn.

2. Dinesh Karthik has entered into full-fledged commentary

The 38-year-old veteran cricketer has already been in the broadcasting field for quite some time and has been involved in several commentary and broadcasting stints. We have seen on innumerable number of occasions that cricketers integrate themselves into commentary post their retirement.

That Karthik has been into commentary, is a clear indication that his retirement isn’t far away.

3. IPL 2025 will have a mega-auction

Since IPL 2025 will have a mega-auction, teams can retain only a handful of players. Since RCB already have formidable players such as Virat Kohli, Faf Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammad Siraj, it is unlikely that they will be bent upon retaining Karthik.

There are always chances of being unsold in the IPL Mega-Auctions as Karthik is quite old now. This could be another reason why the former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain decides to call it quits from this tournament.
