Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson has heaped praise on current Gujarat Titans (GT) captain, Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old cricketer is the captain of the Gujarat side and is the knight in shining armour of the 2022 IPL champions.
Gujarat didn’t have the ideal IPL 2024 season when Gill took over the reins of captaincy from Hardik Pandya. They had a forgettable season where he were languishing at the bottom half of the table and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in their existence since 2022.
However, Williamson, who has played for Gujarat under the captaincy of the 25-year-old Indian batter, has reserved praise for his cricketing brain.
“He’s a very well put together human. A great cricketing brain and cares about his team-mates. He’s very sure on how he wants to go about his business, which I think it’s a really strong leadership quality and quite infectious, so there’s no surprises really that he’s touted for leadership for some of the Indian sides in the near future,” said Kane Williamson to ESPNCricInfo.
Williamson also garnished praise on Shubman Gill’s remarkable timing of the ball.
“When you watch him train and you watch him play, something that stands out is the time that he has. He’s got so much time, whether the wicket’s doing a little bit, whether he’s facing guys bowling high speed or moving the ball, he’s so still. He hits the ball in conventional areas, but very, very hard. He’s a beautiful timer of the ball and has a lot of time,” said the former Kiwi skipper, who won the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021 finals.
Gujarat Titans kickstart their IPL 2025 campaign on 25th March 2025
Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are the remaining 2 teams to play their first matches in the IPL. Gill’s Gujarat will be locking horns with Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Shubman Gill is the Orange Cap winner (Award in IPL for Highest Run-Scorer) of IPL 2023 and he had a terrific season where he plundered 890 runs at a terrific strike-rate of 157.80.
