Serious concerns regarding police readiness and organizational planning were raised when 11 people were crushed to death and 47 others were injured outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium on Wednesday night, turning a lavish celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) first IPL win into a tragedy.
In what was supposed to be a celebratory evening turned into a bloodshed that left 11 people dead at the moment. Thousands of people who had gathered outside the iconic stadium, to catch a glimpse of Team RCB and the trophy that they had won, had to witness nightmares.
The rush was between 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM and it turned into a catastrophic event. Police couldn’t handle the rush and there were serious concerns enveloping the event – administrative and executive.
“The crowd was beyond our control. Even though we had deployed force, it was too much. We had to resort to lathi charge at some points. The problem was the stadium gates were narrow, and the pressure of the crowd caused the tragedy,” said a Police Officer as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Several fans performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on some of the injured. Traffic jams near the stadium made it difficult for police to transport the injured to hospitals. A number of them were transported in ambulances, police cars, and even private automobiles. The deceased’s family members were discovered sobbing outside Bowring Hospital upon seeing their family members.
