Punjab Kings (PBKS) outclassed Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 to book a berth in the finals. Notably, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have already advanced to the finals.

Batting first in Qualifier 2, Mumbai Indians posted a competitive total of 203 runs and Punjab needed a big show. After the openers departed within the powerplay, the onus was on Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer put up a show as he scored 87* runs off 41 deliveries. Any delivery in the slot and Iyer packed a punch and deposited the ball in the stands. Mind you, it was not an easy run-chase for Punjab Kings as Iyer and co. had to break a sweat to match up to the prowess of the Mumbai Indians batters.

Post the game, when the customary handshakes between the players were happening, Shreyas Iyer was visibly frustrated and upset with Shashank Singh and hurled abuses at him. He even refused the handshake with the finisher of Punjab Kings.

Why did this incident between Shreyas Iyer and Shashank Singh take place?

When Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera were resurrecting the innings, it felt like Punjab were in the driver’s seat in the game. After the batter was dismissed by Ashwani Kumar in the 16th over, Mumbai had found a crevice through which they can stage a comeback.

In came Shashank Singh and he always has a reputation of finishing the match. But to everyone’s shock, Singh was run-out after a lacklustre effort from him. It was a direct-hit throw from Hardik Pandya and Shashank had to go back to the hut.

What was frustrating for the Punjab captain was that Singh took the run very casually and was seen jogging towards the non-strikers end before hurrying up – but it was too late.
