With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 set to restart on May 17 after a temporary suspension, the participation of Australian stars Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc has become a major talking point.
Both players, along with several other Australian cricketers, returned home following the league’s suspension due to border tensions between India and Pakistan.
Cricket Australia’s Official Stance
Cricket Australia (CA) has issued a clear statement regarding the return of its players for the remainder of IPL 2025.
CA said it will fully support the individual decisions of players on whether to return to India or not. The board emphasized that it will not mandate a return, but will instead back whatever choice each player makes.
“Cricket Australia will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not,” CA stated. “Team management will work through preparation implications for the World Test Championship final for those players who choose to play in the remaining IPL matches.”
Factors Affecting Player Availability
- World Test Championship (WTC) Final: The WTC final, scheduled to begin just eight days after the IPL final (June 3), is a significant factor. Key players like Cummins, Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Travis Head are central to Australia’s plans for the WTC final, and some may prioritize preparation for that event over returning to the IPL.
- Security and Logistics: CA is in ongoing communication with the Australian government and the BCCI regarding security arrangements for players who consider returning to India.
Current Status of Cummins & Starc
- Pat Cummins: Cummins had previously confirmed his intention to play the full IPL 2025 season and was leading Sunrisers Hyderabad before the suspension. However, after the suspension, he returned to Australia along with other teammates. Whether he returns will depend on his personal decision, with CA’s backing either way.
- Mitchell Starc: Starc also returned to Australia and, like Cummins, has not confirmed if he will rejoin the IPL. Reports suggest some Australian players, including Starc and Hazlewood, are unlikely to return, but no final decisions have been announced.
