The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction will be taking place on December 23rd 2022 in Kochi and teams have already submitted their retention lists to the apex body of Indian cricket, BCCI. Several high-profile players have been released into the auction pool. Similarly, a lot of marquee players have registered their names for the auction.

Post the unexpected exit in the ICC ODI World Cup 2015, England has adopted a dominant brand of cricket. They play with a lot of explosiveness and the players have been groomed into being swashbuckling hitters. Therefore, the IPL is suited for the English players.

In the IPL 2023 retention window, several English players have been released from their respective franchises. In this article, we take a look at 3 players from England who have been released by their respective IPL franchises:

1. Chris Jordan (Chennai Super Kings)

One of the most dreaded death-over bowlers, Chris Jordan was released by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. He is England’s all-time highest wicket-taker. But the English bowler had a dismal IPL 2022 as he managed to bag only 2 wickets in 4 games. Thus, the MS Dhoni-led CSK decided to release him ahead of IPL 2023.

2. Alex Hales (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the IPL 2022 season, Hales pulled out before the start of the tournament. KKR thus acquired the services of Australia’s T20I skipper, Aaron Finch. Hales opted out of IPL 2023 as well due to personal reasons, Thus, KKR were forced to release the swashbuckling English opener.

3. Sam Billings (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Another English player released by the KKR franchise is Sam Billings, The wicket-keeper batter played 8 games for the Purple and Gold Brigade in IPL 2022 and managed to muster 169 runs. Billings has pulled out of IPL 2023 to focus on the longer formats. He will thus not be a part of the upcoming IPL.
