Rehan Ahmed, a debutant leg-spinner for England, finished the third and final Test of the series against Pakistan in Karachi with a five-wicket haul. Ahmed helped his team to restrict Pakistan to 216 runs while giving up only 48 runs and taking five wickets in the second innings.
Rehan took a five-wicket haul on his dream debut at the age of 18 years, 126 days, making him the youngest bowler in men’s Test history to do so. On day three of the Karachi Test, the leg-spinner took his fifth wicket, breaking the previous record held by Pat Cummins.
Rehan followed in the footsteps of Will Jacks earlier in the series by being the 53rd England bowler to take five wickets or more on Test debut. However, Rehan was the youngest to accomplish the feat in a Test debut due to his current age. Rehan received a test cap for the third Test of the series, becoming him England’s youngest-ever Test debutant.
In the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year, Ahmed made an impression as England’s second-highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets in four matches at an average of 12.58.
Restricted Pakistan to a total of 216
England is chasing 167 to win in the second innings of the third Test after establishing a 2-0 lead. Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel both hit half-centuries as Pakistan was batting well in their second innings, but Rehan Ahmed’s five-for limited the visitors to a total of 216.
Rehan’s 5-wicket haul
Rehan was given the ball for bowling on Monday, 41 overs into Pakistan’s second innings, and he immediately had an impact by breaking the partnership between Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel, which had given the hosts the upper hand.
Babar was dismissed by Rehan to start off his performance. The Pakistani captain smacked a long hop straight to Ollie Pope at midwicket, departed for 54. A delivery that turned just enough to snag the outside edge led Pakistani wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan to rush forward as a result of Rehan’s pressure, and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes took a quick chance behind to dismiss him for 7 runs.
After Saud Shakeel mistimed a sweep shot off a googly to a backward square leg, he was knocked out by Rehan for a score of 53. Mohammad Wasim, a Pakistani bowler making his debut, was next taken out by Rehan, who was caught at mid-off. Next, Agha Salman was taken out by Rehan at short fine-leg, giving him a historic five-wicket haul.
