The first SA20 season would have the largest prize pool in South African franchise cricket, with a total prize money of 70 million rand (about Rs 33.5 crore). In 2023, the SA20 premier league is slated to begin on January 10 and end on February 11.
Six teams will compete in the league, according to Cricket South Africa, as all of the teams are sponsored by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners. The management of the league has declared a record amount of prize money to be put on the table for the winning side in an effort to “break barriers” in the various parts of the league.
A number of notable players will compete in the opening game between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals, including David Miller, England’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler, and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan.
SA20 2023: Format & Schedule
33 games are scheduled to be contested between January 10 and February 11. Additionally, in a double round-robin format, each team will play the other twice before the knockout rounds.
Instead of a standard playoff structure like that used in the IPL, there will be two semi-finals and one final. The league’s goals are to provide young players with experience playing with famous players and to raise the level of cricket played by the national team.
This is a first for South African cricket
“We have worked hard to offer a rewarding and unprecedented incentive in the first season of SA20. This is a first for South African cricket, we have never had this type of competitive incentive in our domestic cricket and it is a further indication of SA20’s ambitions to positively impact South African cricket,” said SA20 league commissioner, Graeme Smith, in a statement on Tuesday.
