Sarfaraz represents Mumbai in domestic cricket and last played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Delhi Capitals in 2022. Sarfaraz can also double up as a wicketkeeper if need be.

Sarfaraz Khan received training under the tutelage of his father Naushad Khan and did the hard yards in the maidans in Mumbai. His father was responsible for shaping him up as a cricketer during his formative years.

His mother’s name was Zinat-un-nisa Begum. His brother Musheer Khan is representing India in the ongoing U19 World Cup in South Africa. He has scored 325 runs in the tournament so far. Sarfaraz’s x-factor was that he could smash the ball a long way and hit the big shots.

Initial Career

Sarfaraz Khan in DY Patil T20 Cup 2023

Sarfaraz Khan showed the world what he was made of at the tender age of 12. This happened when he catapulted his name into the record books after he surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record at the Harris Shield after he cracked 439 off 421 balls. The marathon innings consisted of 56 fours and 12 sixes.

After that, the right-handed batter represented India in two World Cup editions in Under 19 cricket which took place in 2014 and 2016. In the 2014 edition, India ended the tournament placing fifth. It was a good time for him with the bat as he made 211 runs in six matches at a healthy average of 70.33.

U-19 World Cup 2016

When it came to the 2016 U19 World Cup, India made it to the final under the watchful eyes of Rahul Dravid where they lost to the West Indies in Bangladesh. Sarfaraz however scored 355 runs with five half-centuries and had a fine average of 71.

He got a chance to feature in an IPL match, 17-year-old then, Sarfaraz was roped in by RCB at the 2015 auctions. The youngster shot to fame with his unbeaten knock of 45 off 21 RR. While walking back to the dressing room after playing that innings, RCB’s talisman Virat Kohli bowed in front of the Mumbaikar an unforgettable moment.

Dropped Due to Lack of Fitness

Despite Sarfaraz’s cameos in 2016, 18-year-old then, he was dropped from the playing XI due to his lack of fitness. The following year, Sarfaraz missed the Indian Premier League as he suffered a leg injury.

IPL Journey

In a surprising move, Royal Challengers Bangalore decided to retain him in 2018 ahead of Universal Boss Chris Gayle and India’s wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul, who raised plenty of eyebrows.

The right-handed batter performance was well below par and that forced the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s management to release him ahead of the 2019 season.

The pocket-sized dynamo was then snapped up by the Northern side PBKS to boost their lower-middle order. But Sarfaraz’s performances did n’t do justice to his ability and he saw his stocks dip drastically.

From being retained for ₹4 crore by RCB in 2018, he found himself being picked up for his base price of ₹20 lakh by the another Northern side DC in the 2023 IPL Auction.
