When we read the history of test cricket, one name that you will see in a cricket history book is James Anderson. A player who is known for his lethal deliveries, who has 704 wickets in his career, played his final match at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.
James Anderson, the legendary English cricketer, announced his retirement from international cricket on July 12. James Anderson has brought an end to an illustrious career spanning over two decades.
Anderson’s retirement is a significant loss to the sport, as he has been a dominant force in international cricket, particularly in Test matches.
Known for his impeccable swing, and, relentless accuracy, Anderson has etched his name in cricket history as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.
Throughout his career, Anderson has delivered numerous memorable deliveries that have left opponents in awe. Here are three of his best deliveries:
1. The Magical In-swinger to Michael Clarke (2013 Ashes Series)
The 2013 Ashes series in England saw Anderson at his lethal best. During the first Test at Trent Bridge, he produced one of the most unforgettable deliveries of his career to dismiss Australian captain Michael Clarke. Clarke, a seasoned batsman, was completely undone by Anderson’s mastery.
Australia was fighting back in their first innings, and Clarke was looking solid at the crease. The ball moved slightly away from Clarke’s straight bat defense, and in the next second, gently dislodged the bails off the stumps.
Clarke, fully on the front foot, almost falls over. Anderson and England celebrate as the Aussie walks back, taking a look at the stumps for one last time to get a glimpse of that magic.
2. The off stump of Brendon McCullum (Trent Bridge 2008)
In 2008, Anderson delivered a masterful outswinger to dismiss New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum at Trent Bridge.
The ball seemed to be too straight initially, leading McCullum to believe he could flick it to the leg side.
However, just before reaching the pitch, the ball moved away sharply, taking McCullum’s off stump with it.
The sheer late movement and precision of this delivery left the batsman bamboozled and the crowd in awe of Anderson’s talent.
3. Hot reverse swinger to Ajinkya Rahane (Chennai 2021)
In 2021, during the India-England Test series, Anderson showcased his adaptability by dismissing Ajinkya Rahane with a brilliant reverse-swinging delivery in Chennai.
Bowling a full, inswinging delivery that moved away late, Anderson forced Rahane to play at it, only to find the gap between bat and pad.
The ball crashed into the stumps, leaving the Indian batsman helpless against the veteran pacer’s speed.
This wicket highlighted Anderson’s skill in using the conditions to his advantage and his ability to remain a threat even in the subcontinent.
