Vinesh Phogat has been hospitalized due to dehydration shortly after being disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics 2024.
The 29-year-old, who made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, was found to be slightly overweight during the weigh-in on the morning of the final match.
Despite the best efforts by Vinesh’s team to help her lose the extra weight overnight, she was unable to make the 50 kg limit, leading to her disqualification from the competition.
Vinesh, who usually competes in the 53 kg category, had dropped down to 50kg specifically for the Olympics in pursuit of the gold medal.
Hospitalization Due to Dehydration
Shortly after being informed of her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat fainted due to severe dehydration, according to reports.
She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Sanjay Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), confirmed that Vinesh was hospitalized and is currently under observation.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) released a statement expressing regret over Vinesh’s disqualification and requesting privacy for the wrestler during this difficult time.
They emphasized the immense hard work and dedication Vinesh had shown in her preparations for the Olympics.
Vinesh’s Journey to the Final
Vinesh’s road to the Olympic final was nothing short of remarkable. She had defeated reigning champion Yui Susaki of Japan in a stunning upset, ending Susaki’s impressive 82-0 record against non-Japanese opponents.
Vinesh also secured victories over Oksana Livach of Ukraine and Yusleylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba to reach the final, cementing her status as a top contender for the gold medal.
The news of her disqualification has sent shockwaves through the Indian sports community, with fans and fellow athletes expressing their heartbreak and support for Vinesh on social media. Many had high hopes for her to clinch India’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in women’s wrestling.
