Hardik Pandya return

Indian cricket star Hardik Pandya is set to return to domestic cricket and will play for Baroda in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25. He is returning to domestic cricket after nearly eight years.

This move comes just before the highly anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction, where Pandya has been retained as captain of the Mumbai Indians but is now looking to contribute to his state team under the leadership of his brother, Krunal Pandya.

A New Chapter in Domestic Cricket

Hardik’s decision to join Baroda is notable, especially considering his absence from domestic tournaments due to international commitments and injuries.

His last appearance for Baroda was during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, and he has not played in the SMAT since January 2016.

That particular match was pivotal in his career, occurring just days before he made his T20I debut for India. Now, with a renewed focus on contributing at the domestic level, Hardik aims to bring his all-round skills back into play.

The SMAT tournament is set to kick off on November 23, just a day before the IPL auction takes place in Jeddah.

Hardik’s return is expected to bolster Baroda’s chances in a competitive Group B, which includes formidable teams such as Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Karnataka.

His experience and explosive batting style will be crucial for Baroda as they seek to improve on their runner-up finish from the previous season.

Leadership Under Krunal Pandya

Playing under Krunal’s captaincy adds an intriguing dynamic to Hardik’s return.

Krunal has been in excellent form, leading Baroda to impressive performances in the ongoing domestic season, including topping Group A in the Ranji Trophy with four victories out of five matches.

His leadership skills have been evident, particularly during their successful campaign, which included a notable win over Mumbai.

The Pandya brothers’ collaboration on the field is highly anticipated by fans and analysts alike.

With Hardik’s explosive batting and Krunal’s strategic acumen, Baroda looks set to make a strong statement in the SMAT tournament.

Implications for IPL 2025

While Hardik has been retained as captain of the Mumbai Indians, this move to play domestic cricket raises questions about his long-term commitment to the franchise.

The Mumbai Indians have had a challenging IPL 2024 season, failing to qualify for the playoffs. Hardik’s performance in SMAT could be critical not only for his state team but also for regaining form ahead of the IPL season.

The IPL auction is expected to be a pivotal moment for many players, including Krunal Pandya, who was released by the Lucknow Super Giants and will be looking for a new team.
