‘I don’t rate him highly as a skipper,’- Virender Sehwag On David Warner After SRH Suffers Defeat Against CSK

Date:

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s poor run in IPL 2021 continues as they suffered their 5th defeat of the season. SRH lost the match against CSK by 7 wickets and Virender Sehwag has slams, David Warner, for his sluggish knock against three-time IPL winner. The former Indian opener feels that the approach of the southpaw was not good due to which the team had to suffer.

David Warner managed a run-a-ball fifty against Chennai Super Kings at Arun Jately Stadium in Delhi. The track looked good for the batsmen. Manish Pandey scored 35 balls fifty. Later on, Kane Williamson’s hard-hitting showed that there was nothing for the bowlers. Even in the 2nd innings, the batters easily managed runs with their willow. However, overall in the match, it was David Warner, who looked in a struggling position while batting.

Virender Sehwag said that if the game was being played in Chennai then it could have been rated as a good knock. But, in Delhi, it never looked like a worthy enough knock for SRH. He added that if Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey can score runs on a good strike rate then David Warner is expected to fire.

“Had the game been played in Chennai, it would have been a great partnership, at a scoring rate of 8 runs per over. But it was Delhi and not Chepauk. 171 has to be a low total because it was a perfect batting track. Kane Williamson had no problems in getting runs which means the wicket was good.

Sehwag feels that the David Warner’s approach in the match was quite poor. As per him, the Aussie opener should have batted without hesitation as their were batsmen in the team, who could have scored runs from lower down the order.

“The thought process of David Warner was extremely poor. You cannot expect slow innings from him. The approach wasn’t up to the mark. He should have batted without any hesitation. The wicket was good and the ball was coming to the bat. If Manish Pandey can score a half-century off 36 balls and Warner gets a run-a-ball fifty. More runs could have been scored,” he said.

“Warner could have taken a chance if he was set after playing 30-40 balls. He should have scored at least 30 runs in the next 50 balls. He knew that the likes of Williamson, Jadhav, and Shankar would come next and they can hit big shots. So, he could have played an attacking game.

“Well, I don’t rate him highly as a skipper. But he used to do a few good things earlier which he couldn’t against CSK. If Williamson had been the captain, we could have seen him doing something different. Because he knows the fact if you don’t go for wickets, you won’t win the game,” Sehwag said.
