Women’s Premier League 2023 Team Names: Latest news, Cities, Franchise Owners, Bidding Amount, All You Need To Know About WPL

The winners of the bid for the Women’s Premier League were announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday. The five cities that will be included in the inaugural season of the WPL league were also announced when the Indian Board made the announcement on social media.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially confirmed five teams for the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), marking a historic occasion for women’s cricket in India.

The Ahmedabad team received the highest bid, worth Rs. 1289 crore, from the Adani Group. Indiawin Sports Private Limited (a subsidiary of the Reliance group), Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, and Capri Global are the other four teams with the highest bids.

WPL 2023: Number of Bidders

A closed-bid process was used to choose the winning bids for the five WPL teams from a total of 17 entities. Seven IPL team owners reportedly showed interest in investing in the women’s edition. The owners of the Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Royal Challengers Bangalore all made bids.

Finally, offers from the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals to buy a women’s franchise were successful.

The other two cities with teams are Ahmedabad and Lucknow. The winning bidders were Adani Sportsline Pvt Ltd and Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd.

WPL 2023: Confirmed Cities

The five franchises submitted a total offer evaluation of INR 4,669.99 crore, according to the BCCI announcement of the WPL’s successful bids. Ahmedabad was the most expensive team, and the Adani Sportsline Group paid INR 1,289 crores to acquire them. 

Mumbai was purchased for INR 912.99 crores by Indiawin Sports, the MI owners. Bangalore was purchased for INR 901 crores by Royal Challengers Group, which is also the IPL franchise RCB’s owners.

JSW-GMR Cricket Group, the owners of the IPL side Delhi Capitals, paid INR 810 crores for Delhi, and Capri Global Holdings successfully offered INR 757 crores for Lucknow.

WPL 2023: Auctions and player registrations

The WPL player registration period closes on January 26 at 5:00 IST. The “reserve price” that each player sets for themselves serves as their base pricing. The base prices for uncapped players are INR 10 lakh and INR 20 lakh, while the bracket for capped players is INR 30 lakh, INR 40 lakh, and INR 50 lakh.

It’s anticipated that an auction will take place the first week of February. Each of the five teams will receive a first-season budget of INR 12 crore.

WPL 2023: Live Streaming Rights

One of the most expensive women’s leagues in the world of sports, Viacom18 paid INR 951 crore for the media rights to the WPL for the first five seasons of the league (2023–27).
