Bismah Maroof, the captain of Pakistan’s women’s cricket team, has resigned from her position. She made the decision to step down as captain immediately following the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa.
The Pakistan Women’s World Cup performance was disappointing as they were eliminated from an ICC event after losing three of their four group-stage games. In international cricket, Bismah Maroof led Pakistan for a considerable amount of time. She has led her team in 34 ODIs and 62 T20Is.
Bismah Maroof will no longer be in charge, but she will still play regularly for Pakistan and earn honors for her country. The Pakistani women’s cricket team has a long history, and all-rounder Bismah, who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm leg-break, has contributed significantly to the team.
In both ODI and T20I formats, Bismah eclipsed the Pakistani women’s cricket team’s previous record for most runs scored in June 2022. She has constantly given the team strong performances.
The right time for a transition
“There has been no bigger honor for me than leading the team. Now, I feel that it is the right time for a transition and a chance to groom a young captain. I will always be there to assist, guide and support the team and the young captain in every way,” Bismah tweeted.
Najam Sethi accepted Bismah’s resignation
Najam Sethi, the president of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), accepted Bismah’s resignation on Wednesday.
“I have accepted the resignation of @maroof_bismah Captain of Pakistan Women’s National Team. She wants to make way for a younger colleague. But happily, she will continue to play for Pakistan and bring laurels for her country,” Sethi tweeted.
Questions were raised about Maroof’s captaincy
In the past, concerns over the development of leadership were raised in response to Pakistan’s poor performance in the 2022 ODI World cup in New Zealand, where they won only one of their seven round-robin contests and were eliminated in the league stage. PCB exhibited confidence in Maroof, nevertheless, and decided to keep her on as captain for the 2022–23 campaign.
Maroof performs an all-around role for Pakistan. She bowls right-arm leg breaks and bats left-handed. In the 62 T20I matches Pakistan has played under her direction, they have won 27, and they have lost 32. The Ladies in Green have only triumphed 16 times in their 34 ODI contests, all while Maroof served as captain.
The stylish Pakistani batswoman has played 124 ODIs over the span of her 17-year career, scoring 3110 runs at an average of 30.19. In 132 T20Is, she has amassed 2658 runs at an average of 27.1.
