WPL 2023: Who Is Saika Ishaque? MI Star Who Is Presently Holding The Purple Cap

Date:

Mumbai Indians have always been a dominant side in franchise cricket. After winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) on 5 occasions, they are now extending their unparalleled dominance over the Women’s Premier League (WPL) too. And one of their standout players has been an uncapped Indian bowling all-rounder in the form of Saika Ishaque.

The Harmanpreet Kaur led Mumbai Indians have got off to the fairytale start in WPL 2023. Mumbai have registered a hat-trick of victories and are ruling the roost in the first edition of this game-changing T20 League.

Mumbai Indians also presently are the only unbeaten side in WPL 2023. After they beat Meg Lanning’s Delhi Capitals, they stormed to 3 victories in 3 games. Mumbai Indians would be looking to continue with this momentum.

They next lock horns with UP Warriorz on 12th March 2023. It will be played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Saika Ishaque hails from Kolkata

The 27-year-old bowling all-rounder hails from Kolkata, West Bengal. Bengal has a vibrant culture of cricket and the former legendary bowler of Team India, Jhulan Goswami too hails from this state. Saika Ishaque has also played for Kalighat Club Women, which is a very popular domestic cricket club of West Bengal.

The all-rounder lost her father at a young age

Saika Ishaque was struck with tragedy at a very early stage in her life. She lost her father at a very early age. Despite that, she did not let grief absorb and engulf her. Ishaque had small hair during her childhood and she used to play cricket with the boys. That’s how she got the competitive spirit of cricket engrained in her.

Saika Ishaque is vividly known for her blistering cameo in the Senior Women’s ODI Tournament

Saika Ishaque struck a blistering cameo of 14 runs in just 8 balls under tremendous pressure. This was in the quarter finals of the Senior Women’s ODI Tournament versus Punjab. This proved that when the backs were against the walls, Saika Ishaque could keep her cool and composure and could play well.

Ishaque presently has the Purple Cap (award for most wickets) under her belt in the ongoing WPL 2023 with 9 wickets. If she continues with this momentum, then she can soon land herself with an India team debut and make her entire family proud.
