Courtney Walsh Sacked As Head Coach Of West Indies

Date:

After the West Indies women’s team failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the recently concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has sacked Head Coach Courtney Walsh.

The legendary former West Indian bowler has faced the axe from the apex body of West Indian cricket as his contract has not been renewed. Walsh’s team has been removed and the board said that they will be shortly starting the process of recruiting a new back-end team.

Assistant coaches of the women’s team, Corey Collymore and Robert Samuels too have been removed from their positions. The apex body is looking at a complete overhaul to enable things to go in the right direction and so that the results keep coming.

Jimmy Adams lauds Courtney Walsh and his team

“We are very grateful for the contribution of Courtney and his technical team over the past two and a half years and we wish them all the best going forward. “CWI remains committed to our international women’s programme and will now be focusing on recruiting a new Head Coach and technical support team.

An interim technical support team will be put in place during the recruitment period,” said Jimmy Adams, who is the director of CWI.

Courtney Walsh was at the helm of the West Indies women’s team from October 2020. He took the proceedings forward from former Head Coach, Gus Logie. Under his tutelage, West Indies defeated Pakistan at home and away in 2021.

In the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2022, West Indies had reached the semi-finals. They went down in front of eventual World Champions, Australia. West Indies had lost the game by 157 runs.

Out of 24 T20Is, West Indies’ women’s team had won only 7 T20Is. In the ODI format, the team had won 11 out of 32 ODIs.

Courtney Walsh previously has been a fast-bowling coach and a talent scout for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). He has also been the assistant coach of Bangladesh previously.
