Manchester United started their Premier League 2023-24 season on a high as they defeated Wolves, 1-0. Raphael Varane had scored the goal for The Red Devils as he lit the entire Old Trafford Stadium on fire.
Coming on the back of a poor pre-season tour in USA, Manchester United had their task cut out. They had to be dominant from the word go and they delivered the goods with perfection and accuracy.
Wolves played really well in this away game under their new Head Coach, Gary O’Neil. Notably, O’Neil had replaced Julen Lopetegui, just days before the start of the new season for the Wolves.
Several new players played for Manchester United in what was the start of a new journey. The likes of Mason Mount and Andre Onana made their debut in the Premier League for Manchester United.
Andre Onana had a memorable debut as he kept a clean sheet and made some quick saves to prevent the Wolves from scoring a goal in the game. In the dying minutes of the game, Andre Onana had clashed with Sasa Kalajdzic and there were calls for a penalty. But it was fair in the eyes of the referee and the VAR and Manchester United held on to their lead.
The entire Old Trafford stadium was riddled with shouts and criticisms
Not only inside the stadium but also outside the stadium, there were protests from the Manchester United supporters. They want the owners of the club to go out and were shouting chants of “We want the Glazers out”.
Several fans were also unhappy with the delay on the verdict of Mason Greenwood’s future in the club. In January 2022, Mason Greenwood was accused of an alleged assault on his girlfriend.
He was suspended by the club and was also arrested by the Greater Manchester Police.
Raphael Varane scored the goal for Manchester United
After not being able to score a single goal in the previous season, Raphael Varane scored the opening goal for The Red Devils. In the 76th minute, skipper Bruno Fernandes chipped in a loopy aerial ball to Aaron Van Bissaka.
Bissaka took a drop and lobbed the ball to Varane, who was at the far post. Varane’s deft header made sure that United score the goal. The entire crowd at Old Trafford went into a frenzy as Manchester United tasted victory in their first game of Premier League 2023-24.
