India’s team for the forthcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 as well as the next tri-series in South Africa was announced on Wednesday by the All-India Women’s Selection Committee. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 is scheduled to start on February 10 and India will kick off its campaign against Pakistan in Cape Town on February 12.
With England, the West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland, India is a member of Group 2. The semi-final matches will include the top two teams from each group at the conclusion of the group stage. It will take place on February 26. India was the runner-up in the previous edition.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the team
The captain of the Indian women’s team will be Harmanpreet Kaur, with Smriti Mandhana serving as her deputy. Shikha Pandey, a seasoned pacer, was also selected for the World Cup team. Her inclusion highlights the lack of depth in the field of fast bowling.
Jemimah Rodrigues has managed to maintain her position on the team despite her poor performance in India’s 1-4 series loss to mighty Australia. Left-arm pacer Anjali Sarvani joined the squad after her first series against Australia. The other options for fast bowlers are Renuka Thakur and Pooja Vastrakar, albeit their ability to play for the team depends on their physical condition.
A tri-series tournament ahead of world cup
India will play in a tri-series tournament beginning on January 19 in East London, where it will compete against South Africa and the West Indies. Sushma Verma, a batswoman and wicketkeeper, and Amanjot Kaur, an all-rounder without prior experience, have been added to the squad for the seven-match series that ends on February 2.
