IND vs BAN 1st Test Batting Collapse

The first Test match between India and Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on September 19, 2024, witnessed a dramatic collapse of the Indian top order, which left the team struggling at 34 for three within the first ten overs.

Three key players—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli—were dismissed, raising concerns about the Indian batting lineup. Here are three reasons that contributed to this top-order collapse.

    1. Exceptional Bowling by Hasan Mahmud

Hasan Mahmud emerged as the standout performer for Bangladesh, claiming the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in a devastating spell.

His ability to swing the ball effectively under overcast conditions played a pivotal role in dismantling India’s top order.

Mahmud set up Rohit beautifully with deliveries that moved both ways before finally inducing an edge that was caught at slip for just six runs.

Following Rohit’s dismissal, Gill fell for a duck after attempting to flick a delivery down the leg side, resulting in an edge to the wicketkeeper. Then, Kohli’s dismissal came shortly after Gill’s.

Mahmud’s disciplined bowling and ability to exploit the conditions not only showcased his talent but also highlighted the vulnerabilities in India’s batting approach against quality pace bowling.

    2. Overcast Conditions and Pace-Friendly Pitch

The match conditions played a significant role in the Indian batsmen’s struggles.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain opted to bowl first after winning the toss, taking advantage of the moisture in the pitch and overcast skies that aided swing bowling.

The Chepauk pitch traditionally offers assistance to fast bowlers early on, especially when there is moisture present.

The combination of conditions made it difficult for Indian batsmen to settle into their innings.

    3. Pressure of Expectations and Recent Form

The pressure on India’s top order was compounded by recent performances leading into this Test series. Both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had faced scrutiny over their form:

As captain, Rohit carries the weight of expectations not only from fans but also from within the team. His early dismissal set a negative tone for India’s innings.

Returning to Test cricket after a hiatus since 2023, Kohli was also aimed to make an impact but fell victim to his well-documented weakness against deliveries outside off-stump.
