As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 approaches, the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise are in a spot of bother. Their skipper Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of IPL 2023 after a fatal car crash on 30th December 2022 when he was on his way back to his home town, Roorkee.

This creates a huge void in the captaincy position and also in the wicket-keeping option. Among a few captaincy options, we feel David Warner can don the role of the captain in IPL 2023 for Delhi Capitals.

An epitome of class, grit and determination, David Warner has witnessed a lot of hardships in his cricketing career but has never bogged down under pressure. Even after being banned for a year because of the Sandpaper Gate in 2018, Warner sprung back with immense resilience and proved all his naysayers wrong.

This never-say-die attitude of David Warner can most certainly help his case as a captain for the Delhi Capitals franchise.

Delhi also have a few other options in the form of Manish Pandey and Prithvi Shaw from whom they can choose their captain.

In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why David Warner is the frontrunner to be Delhi Capital’s captain in IPL 2023:

1. Good captaincy record in IPL

The aggressive southpaw is also known for his aggressive style of captaincy. Warner has previously been the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad and has a pretty good track record as a captain.

He has captained the Hyderabad franchise in 67 matches and he has mustered 35 wins. David Warner has an impressive win percentage of 53.73 as a captain in the IPL.

2. David Warner has won an IPL title before

Cast your mind back to 2016. Sunrisers Hyderabad had laid their hands on their maiden IPL title after they beat Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the finals. The previous experience of winning an IPL title would flush in a lot of confidence to the 36-year-old flamboyant batter.

3. Scores truckloads of runs with ease

A captain should always lead from the front. If the captain is a batter, then he should also score the majority of the runs for the team in order to set a good example. David Warner is a run-machine in the IPL and has so far notched up 5881 runs so far.

Warner also has bagged the Orange Cap (which is given to the leading run-scorer in an IPL season), a record 3 times. The Australian batter has won the award in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
