Women’s IPL 2023: Viacom Won The Media Rights For INR 951 Crore

Date:

Following the auction held in Mumbai, Viacom 18 has won media rights for the women’s IPL for a term of five years. For the five-year period, 2023 to 2027, the corporation would pay INR 951 crore (about USD 116.7 million), which BCCI secretary Jay Shah referred to as “huge” when making the announcement on Twitter.

Viacom 18 outbid other organizations, such as Disney Star*, Sony, and Zee, in a closed-bid auction. The rights were sold internationally, including in India, and fall into three categories: linear (TV), digital, and combined (TV and digital).

Shah stated that even though the tournament’s format has not yet been made public, the bidding sum would have a per-match value of INR 7.09 crore (about USD 866,000) over a five-year period. Contrarily, the men’s IPL secured a five-year deal in June of last year for INR 48,390.5 crore (about USD 6.2 billion at the time), with a per-match worth of INR 58 crore (USD 7.43 million approx.).

Viacom has committed INR 951 crores

“Congratulations Viacom18 for winning the Women’s IPL media rights. Thank you for your faith in BCCI and BCCI Women. Viacom has committed INR 951 crores which means per match value of INR 7.09 crores for the next 5 years (2023-27). This is massive for Women’s Cricket,” Shah tweeted.

“After pay equity, today’s bidding for media rights for Women’s IPL marks another historic mandate. It’s a big and decisive step for the empowerment of women’s cricket in India, which will ensure the participation of women of all ages. New dawn indeed!”

Women’s IPL 2023 date

A franchise-based structure is likely to see five teams in the debut season of the much awaited Women’s IPL, which is scheduled to begin play in 2023. The BCCI approved the start of the Women’s IPL at the Governing Council Meeting of the previous year.

The first season is probably going to be played in March, despite the fact that no official dates have been announced. On January 25, the five Women’s IPL teams will be announced by the BCCI. At least eight out of the ten IPL franchisees have reportedly stated that they will bid for a franchise.

The first season of the women’s IPL, which will feature a total of 22 matches, is expected to run from March 5 to 23 (though the exact dates have not yet been announced).
