Esports has become a booming industry in the recent past. However, albeit its momentous growth and the spike in the number of eSports tournaments, there are still some gaps to be filled in the big picture of eSports development in India. Esports as a career option is still looked down upon in India. Parents see eSports as a waste of time and something that will steer kids away from more important pursuits like academic interests. In a country such as ours, is it possible to get an eSports scholarship? Read ahead to find out.
eSports Scholarship
There are several scholarships for gaming and esports in nations with more developed eSports industries, such the USA. In actuality, a lot of institutions provide scholarships for gamers. Even Ivy League institutions fall within this category. The fact that there is a well-known eSports competitive circuit at the collegiate level may be the cause of this. In universities in London as well, they provide eSports scholarships to deserving students, despite the fact that the situation in the UK is not as advanced as it is in the USA.
eSports Scholarship In India
HP has taken the initiative in India and established the first eSports scholarship. They introduced the HP eSports Gold Quest Scholarship. Ambitious gamers between the ages of 16 and 20 can apply for the scholarship. Three people will be awarded this scholarship. Along with a monthly pay of Rs 50,000, the perks package includes a variety of HP gaming accessories. The process of choosing the winners is still under progress.
This raises the question of whether Indian institutions may follow suit and provide students with eSports scholarships or perhaps admit them depending on their success at eSports competitions. It is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully, we will witness eSports becoming a more mainstream career option and adequate financial and moral support being given to the athletes.
