ISL 2023-24: Mumbai City FC Crowned Champions For 2nd Time

Date:

Mumbai City FC defeated Mohun Bagan Super Giants 3-1 in the finals of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 and won the ISL title for the 2nd time. Notably, the match at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium witnessed a crackerjack of a match and ultimately, the Islanders kept their nerves and clinched off the title.

It was the 2nd title for Mumbai City FC after their title-victory in ISL 2020-21. Notably, they had won the ISL League Shield in that season as well. In this season, it was Mohun Bagan who lifted the ISL League Shield after a narrow victory against Mumbai City FC in their final league game.

Jason Cummins had opened the scoring for the home side in the final game, at the stroke of halftime. It was a long-range shot from Dimitri Petratos, which was saved by the Islanders’ goalkeeper, Phurba Lachenpa.

Eventually, Lachenpa put the ball in the trajectory of Cummins and he pulled the trigger and scored the goal against the run-of-play.

In the 2nd half, Mumbai City FC came all guns blazing and opened the goal-scoring account. Jorge Pereyra Diaz scored the first goal for the visitors. Substitute Bipin Singh scored the 2nd goal for Mumbai City FC in the 81st minute and made sure that Mumbai City FC had their noses ahead in the game.

Mohun Bagan Super Giants were completely flummoxed by the speed and agility of Mumbai City FC. The Islanders were at their imperious best and deservedly clinched the ISL title, denying Mohun Bagan Super Giants, a crack at winning the ISL title for the second time, in a row.

The Super Giants had won the ISL title in ISL 2022-23 after beating Bengaluru FC on penalties in the all-important finals.

In the extra-time of this game, Jakub Vojtus, another substitute, found his name on the goal-scoring sheet. His left-footed volley kissed the back of the net, outclassing Vishal Kaith.

The entire Salt Lake Stadium went into a state of shock and the die-hard fans of the iconic Mohun Bagan club were dejected and disappointed. It was a contrast of emotions in the two camps.

While it was joy and ecstasy for Mumbai City FC, it was sheer disappointment for Mohun Bagan Super Giants as they lost the title in front of their home crowd.

Nevertheless, the Mariners should hold their heads high up as they are the ISL League Shield winners in this season for finishing at the top of the points table at the end of the league stage of ISL 2023-24.
