The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most popular and lucrative T20 cricket leagues in the world.
Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has seen many great players come and go, with some of them becoming legends of the game.
The Orange Cap is an award given to the leading run-scorer of the IPL season.
Shaun Marsh emerged as the first winner of the Cap and David Warner holds the distinct record of scoring the most numbers of Orange Cap till now.
While many international players have won the coveted Orange Cap, only five Indian players have achieved the feat in the history of the IPL.
Here’s a look at the list of Indian players who have held the Orange Cap in the IPL:
Sachin Tendulkar
Due to his outstanding play throughout the 2010 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian batter to receive the Orange Cap in the IPL.
In the 2010 IPL, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar accomplished this. In 15 games that season, Sachin scored 618 runs.
His highest score during the 2010 season was 89 not out, and his strike rate exceeded 130.
Tendulkar had one of his best IPL seasons in 2010, and he was essential to Mumbai Indians’ win in that year.
The fact that Tendulkar won the Orange Cap in 2010 was evidence of both his skill as a batter and his capacity to deliver consistently across all formats.
Robin Uthappa
By scoring the most runs during the 2014 IPL, Robin Uthappa was awarded the Orange Cap.
As a member of KKR in the IPL, Uthappa won the Orange Cap. Uthappa had a strike rate of 138 while scoring 660 runs in 16 games at the 2014 IPL.
In the 2014 season, Uthappa was an important player for Kolkata Knight Riders.
He was one of the most reliable batsmen and opened the batting for the team.
Together with Gautam Gambhir, he had a potent opening partnership that greatly contributed to the team’s success.
Virat Kohli
In IPL 2016, Virat Kohli won the Orange Cap. Virat Kohli scored 973 runs in 16 matches that year. Virat continues to hold the record for most runs scored in a season and is yet to be broken.
In that single season, he also recorded four centuries.
Kohli’s impressive performance in the tournament was a major factor in RCB’s success throughout the tournament.
He always plays crucial knock when the team needs him.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul is a name that has recently stormed the Indian cricket scene. In the recently finished IPL seasons, the young Karnataka batsman was on fire.
In the 2020 IPL, KL Rahul was awarded the Orange Cap.
KL Rahul played 14 games for Kings XI Punjab during season, scoring 670 runs.
As of the IPL, KL Rahul is the fourth Indian batsman to receive the Orange Cap.
Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad made his IPL debut in the 2020 edition of the tournament and quickly became an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings batting line-up.
In the 2021 season, he has been in sensational form, winning the Orange Cap for the most runs scored in the tournament.
Gaikwad scored 635 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2021 at an average of 45.35 and got the Orange Cap.
