Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricketer has suggested KKR come up with a new opening pair going ahead in Indian Premier League 2021. Shubman Gill is not having a good season with the bat and he has failed alongside Nitish Rana in getting his side off to a good start in the matches.

Nitish Rana is among one of the leading run-scorer from KKR in the ongoing season. But, he is yet to stitch a good partner on the other batting end. Shubman Gill has managed the highest score of 33 runs and he has failed in scoring runs on a good strike rate in the powerplay for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Sunil Gavaskar said that Nitish Rana has performed impressively in the past couple of years. As per him, Rahul Tripathi has earned the reputation of a good opener and he can open for Knight Riders. Also, he feels that KKR needs to rethink the batting position of Sunil Narine. The former player asserted that KKR can come up with the opening combination of Rahul Tripathi and Sunil Narine in the upcoming games.

“Nitish Rana, in the years that he has been very successful for KKR, he has been batting at No.3. So, if Rahul Tripathi can open the batting, which he used to do earlier on for the other franchises, maybe that’s the way to go for him,” Gavaskar told Star Sports after KKR returned to winning ways

“I think KKR have to make up their minds whether Sunil Narine opens the batting with Shubman Gill or Rahul Tripathi opens the batting. With Shubman Gill also – struggling and not quite there; maybe there is a case for Tripathi to open with Sunil Narine,” added Gavaskar.
