In order for Team India to qualify for the World Test Championship Final in 2023, they will need to finish in the top two of the current Test Championship standings. As of now, India is currently in fourth place with a win percentage of 52.08%. The teams ahead of India are Sri Lanka (53.33%) in third, South Africa (60%) in second, and Australia (75%) in first, with the top two qualifying for the final.
In order to move up in the standings, India will need to perform well in the upcoming series against Bangladesh, and Australia. In the present cycle, India has only six more matches to play: two against Bangladesh in the forthcoming series, and four at home against Australia in February and March of next year.
India will need to win almost all of its matches in order to move up in the standings and qualify for the World Test Championship Final. Additionally, India will need to focus on maintaining a high net run rate. A high net run rate means that India will have to win by a big margin. This is important as it will help India move up in the standings even if they do not win all of their matches.
India will also need to pay attention to the results of other teams in the championship. If other teams in contention for the top two spots in the standings are not performing well, India will have a greater chance of qualifying for the World Test Championship Final. Let us take a look at how India can qualify for the WTC final.
How will India enter the WTC Final?
To qualify for the World Test Championships 2021-23 Final, Team India must now win all of their remaining Tests. Pakistan’s loss to England at home has increased India’s prospects of qualifying for the WTC final.
Only Australia and South Africa are ranked higher than India. All that remains for Team India is to win the series against Bangladesh and Australia. The good news for Team India is that it will play two more Test series as part of the WTC Cycle.
The WTC 2019-21 runners-up will play two Tests in Bangladesh before hosting Australia for four Tests. To increase its percentage points, the Rohit Sharma-led team will need to win all six of its remaining games. Given their track record in Bangladesh, Team India is expected to perform well there, and the next series against Australia next year will be exciting.
