IPL 2023: 3 Reasons Why CSK Should Target Kane Williamson

Date:

The release of Kane Williamson by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auctions was a major talking point during the retention window. The former SRH skipper was the Orange Cap holder in 2018 and was one of the biggest names in the Hyderabad squad.

However, his form was dwindling and he did not have a good IPL in 2022. Under his captaincy, SRH finished in the 8th position and Williamson managed to muster only 2016 runs in 13 IPL games in 2022.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could target Kane Williamson as their next skipper. MS Dhoni is in the twilight of his IPL career and he might well call it quits from IPL post this season. In this article, we take a look at 3 reasons why CSK should target Kane Williamson:

1. Potential successor of MS Dhoni

The question of who will take over the reins of CSK after MS Dhoni has posed as a pertinent headache to the CSK management. Prior to the start of IPL 2022, MS Dhoni had handed over the captaincy duties to Ravindra Jadeja.

But the CSK all-rounder failed to soak up the captaincy pressure and the Yellow Army was reeling at the bottom of the table. Jadeja left the captaincy mid-season and Dhoni had to take it back once again. Post the IPL 2023, Kane Williamson could possibly be a good replacement for MS Dhoni as the captain of the Chennai team.

2. Kane Williamson is a dependable anchor

Kane Williamson at number 3 is a dream for any team. The elegant strokes and the game sense of the New Zealand all-format skipper are one of the reasons why he is one of the most admired cricketers of contemporary times.

He is a very dependable anchor and can play all throughout the innings. Williamson has so far amassed 2101 runs in 76 IPL matches.

3. He has truckloads of experience

Having made his first-class debut way back in 2007, the Kiwi skipper has come a long way. Kane Williamson has been playing international cricket since 2010 and made his debut in IPL in 2015. The solid and compact batter has truckloads of experience under his belt and is a superb captain as well.

He led his national team side to the World Test Championship (WTC) title after beating India in 2021. Kane Williamson’s rich experience could be another reason why CSK should purchase him at the IPL 2023 auction.
