The much-awaited Women’s IPL will begin in March 2023 and last for one month, most likely with five teams. As per the Cricbuzz report, the Women’s IPL is reportedly scheduled to take place from March 7 to 22.
After much discussion, a date in March was chosen for the competition following the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. The Women’s IPL 2023 is expected to transform women’s cricket in India and be a game-changer on the field.
200 names to be submitted for WIPL
Over 200 players’ names will be submitted by the selectors for consideration in the Women’s IPL, which will take place sometime in March. According to media reports, the BCCI requested the selectors to develop a pool of players for the WIPL following a recent Governing Council meeting.
The list, which will be presented to the BCCI in a few days, would include more than 160–170 Indian players and 30–40 foreign players. The 15-day window would be sufficient for the five-team league.
The BCCI will first hold an auction for the media rights, then another for the franchises, before confirming the WIPL 2023 dates.
Women’s IPL team from Kerala
There will be a Kerala-based women’s IPL team, Bineesh revealed in a special interview with Asianet News.com. The current KCA leadership, led by Jayesh George, wants to give the KCA its own stadium, visibility, and greater opportunities for female cricket players. According to Bineesh Kodiyeri’s interview, the BCCI will permit a Keralan team to compete in the women’s IPL.
IPL teams expressed their interest
Media reports are claiming that seven IPL teams have informed the BCCI of their wish to field a women’s team. The BCCI has received requests to field teams from Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sri Orbindo Pharma.
