On 2nd April India won the ODI World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy after a long span of 28 years. It was a historic day in Indian cricket and every fan was in the streets celebrating Team India’s milestone win. However, Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer has revealed something that still upsets him a lot as a player.
India met Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup finals and the hosts outclassed the latter in the high-profile final. The former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir and former skipper MS Dhoni stitched one of the most iconic partnerships of 109 runs in order to guide Team India to their 2nd World Cup title. Undoubtedly it was one of the most important knocks that Gambhir and Dhoni played before signing off from cricket.

2011 World Cup was special for every Indian cricket fan as they were watching their favorite batsman Sachin Tendulkar. The Team India that played in the finals was full of Indian cricket heroes that comprised of players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, and others. Surprisingly, that team never played a single game together post World Cup.
Gautam Gambhir said that it is the worst thing. As per him, there is no answer to a question that why was such a step taken by the selectors. The former Indian opener feels this sought of thing would have never happened in the long history of cricket.
“I know that’s probably the worst thing. Bhajji once told me that. Probably the better person to ask the question is the erstwhile coach (Duncan Fletcher who took over immediately after Gary Kirsten’s departure at the end of the World Cup), the captain (MS Dhoni), and the selectors (K Srikkanth and Co,” Gambhir said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“I don’t think this has happened in international ODI cricket history that a team that won a World Cup never played a single match together again,” he added.
Gambhir bid adieu to international cricket back in 2013 and he played his final international game against England in Dharmsala. Earlier, the southpaw had also taken a dig on Duncan Flecther’s, MS Dhoni for injecting rotation policy in the team due to which likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir never got the opportunity to play together.
