The Durand Cup 2023 will be a litmus test for a lot of Indian Super League (ISL) clubs as they will be fighting for the top honours. Mumbai City FC had a good campaign in the previous season.
After finishing as the runners-up in Durand Cup 2022, the Islanders had won the ISL League Shield in the 2022-23 season. Under the astute leadership of Head Coach Des Buckingham, Mumbai City FC had a wonderful season.
Ahead of the Durand Cup 2023 fixtures of them, Mumbai City FC have announced a strong squad. In the 132nd edition of Asia’s oldest football competition, Mumbai City FC would be hoping to cross the finishing line.
Some of their recent signings have been quite solid and will be adding a lot of firepower to their already-strong side. They have firstly signed 30-year-old midfielder Jayesh Rane on loan from Bengaluru FC.
They have also signed Akash Mishra from Hyderabad FC and Tiri from Mohun Bagan Super Giants, in some other notable signings. Vinit Rai from Odisha FC and Yoell van Nieff from Puskas Akademia, have been some other transfers to Mumbai City FC.
A lot of talented youngsters in the form of Lallianzuala Chhangte, Vikram Pratap Singh and Gyamar Nikum have been named in the squad for the 132nd edition of this tournament.
Chhangte was a force to reckon with in the Mumbai City FC squad as he scored 10 goals and had 6 assists under his belt in ISL 2022-23. He deservedly won the Golden Ball Award in the tournament for his dominant footwork and for guiding his team to the ISL playoffs.
Foreigners like Tiri, Alberto Noguera and Greg Stewart will add a lot of experience and dynamics to Des Buckingham’s side.
Mumbai City FC begin their Durand Cup 2023 campaign on 5th August 2023
The ISL league Shield Winners in the previous edition will begin their Durand Cup 2023 campaign against Kolkata Giants, Mohammedan SC. It will be played on 5th August 2023 at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
