For the three-match ODI series against England that will begin on March 1, 2023, Bangladesh has named a 14-man squad. During the three-match One-Day International series against England starting next month, Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal made his way back to the team.
Tamim missed Bangladesh’s 2-1 series victory over India in December due to a groin injury, and after exacerbating the issue during the current Bangladesh Premier League T20 competition, he was deemed doubtful for the match against England.
The left-hander, though, had fully recovered his fitness, according to chief selector Minhajul Abedin, who told AFP that he will be available from the start of the series on March 1 in Dhaka.
“There’s no injury concern about him at the moment. We are hopeful he will be available for all three matches,” he said.
BAN vs ENG squad: Major inclusion
While Taijul Islam made a comeback to the team, Towhid Hridoy received his first call-up. Towhid Hridoy, a top-order batsman, was given his first call-up to the team following a successful campaign in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Hridoy scored 403 runs in 13 games at an average of 36.63, striking out five times at a rate of 140.41. As a like-for-like substitute for Nasum Ahmed, who was dropped, Taijul Islam has returned to the side.
Yasir Ali, Anamul Haque, Nurul Hasan, and Shoriful Islam were the other names that were dropped. In mid-2022, Anamul, who had been absent from the ODI team for four years, made only 33 runs in three innings against India. Yasir scored 25 points in the one game he participated. Nurul, on the other hand, sat out the whole India series.
Tamim was one of those who made a comeback; he played for Khulna Tigers in the majority of BPL games, missing only a handful to maintain his fitness for the England games. In his three one-day international appearances last year, Taijul took five wickets against the West Indies.
“Towhid Hridoy has been doing well in the BPL,” chief selector Minhajul Abedin said. “He was in our pool of potential players and was part of the HP [High Performance] and Bangladesh A sides. Yasir remains in our thinking, as we plan to take another player in the squad. Nasum is being considered for another format, while we dropped Nurul and Shoriful due to form.”
