Delhi Capitals suffered a big blow just ahead of the tournament as their skipper Shreyas Iyer got ruled out of the IPL 2021. It was a major setback for the previous season runners-up. However, they have now announced Rishabh Pant as Delhi Capitals’ new skipper. DC head coach Ricky Ponting is optimistic about Pant’s caliber and the former feels that the Indian international will come out with flying colors.

Shreyas Iyer was announced as Delhi Capitals skipper back in 2018. Since then DC has managed to turn its fortunes. They managed to qualify for playoffs on all the occasions. Also, they finished as the runners-up in IPL 2020. Iyer himself also gave standout performances in the previous season and finished as the second leading run-scorer from Delhi Capitals.

Ricky Ponting Looks Happy With Rishabh Pant Becoming DC Skipper For IPL 2021

DC announced Rishabh Pant as their skipper for IPL 2021 on Tuesday and Ricky Ponting shared his opinion over the same. DC head coach recited that it is a very unfortunate situation for the franchise. But, they are quite motivated that Rishabh Pant will give his best shot as a skipper. The former Aussie skipper also added that Pant deserved such a position.

“Unfortunate that Shreyas will miss the tournament, but looking forward to seeing @RishabhPant17 grab his opportunity. It’s well deserved for his recent performances and he’s coming in with a lot of confidence. I’m convinced captaincy will make him an even better player.”

Earlier, Rishabh Pant looked after getting such responsibility from his franchise. He said that his IPL journey began with Delhi Capitals and it is an honor to lead the same team in Indian Premier League.

“Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harbored. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”
