Chennai Super Kings will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 17th Match of the IPL 2022. Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai will host this fixture on April 9 at 03:30 pm. The clash between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad is also known as South Indian Derby because both the teams are from the southern part of the Indian subcontinent.
In IPL history, both teams have clashed in a total of 16 games out of which 12 have been won by Chennai Super Kings and 4 by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Last year in 2021, similar to the head-to-head stats, Chennai dominated Hyderabad in both the games they played against each other.
In their last encounter in Sharjah, Batting first SRH scored 137 with the loss of seven wickets. Wriddhiman Saha high scored 44. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood got three wickets while giving 6 runs per over and Dwayne Bravo took two wickets.
In the chase, Ruturaj Gaikwad (45) and Faf du Plessis (41) gave a platform to Chennai while Ambati Rayudu 17* and MS Dhoni 14* took Chennai across the winning line with two balls to spare. Jason Holder bagged three scalps for Hyderabad.
Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings has been the second most successful franchise after Mumbai Indians. The MS Dhoni-led side won their 4th IPL title last year after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2021 final in Dubai. Apart from 2021, CSK has won the IPL title in 2010, 2011, and 2018. The franchise was banned alongside Rajasthan Royals in 2015 for 2 years after being found spot-fixing in the league. Despite all the controversies CSK emerged victorious in their comeback, winning the title again in 2018.
This year for Chennai, all eyes will be on their star opener Ruturaj Gaikwad who remained the highest scorer last year with 635 runs in 16 matches. Supporting him and replacing Faf du Plessis will be the Kiwi left-handed batsman, Devon Conway who boasts similar stats like Gaikwad.
Coming to their, middle order, CSK has kept the same players intact as we had seen in the IPL 2021 final. The likes of Robin Uthappa at 4, Ambati Rayudu at 5, and MS Dhoni at 6. Uthappa and Rayudu had done really well for CSK in the middle-order in the past editions. There’s no harm in continuing with them even as they are off their prime age. Meanwhile, MS. Dhoni, the captain at 6 would once again be the bridge between finishers and middle-order.
Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, and Dwayne Bravo will probably pose as all-rounders to shine in both departments. Talking about the bowlers this is a department that saw the most changes in CSK’s squad. The addition of Rajvardhan Hangargekar straight from the U19 World Cup-winning squad will definitely provide an extra edge to their bowling. Tushar Deshpande is also a potent option alongside Srilankan off-break bowler, Maheesh Theekshana.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers had a miserable season in IPL 2021 as they finished at the bottom of the points table with just three wins in 14 matches. Overall their performance in the past few years has been very disappointing. The Hyderabad franchise won their maiden IPL title in the 2016 season, defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 8 runs in the final.
Sunrisers retained the services of three of their players, Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, Umran Malik ahead of the IPL auction. The opening slot could be taken by Rahul Tripathi and Abhishek Sharma or Williamson could promote himself to open the innings in IPL 2022. As the skipper, Kane Williamson would have to choose from a bunch of overseas talent in the Playing 11.
Sean Abbott, Glen Phillips, Aiden Markram, Romario Shepherd, Marco Jansen are some overseas names freshly added to the squad. Nicholas Pooran will daunt the wicketkeeping gloves and will add firepower to the squad. Coming to the bowlers, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Shreyas Gopal, Kartik Tyagi, and T. Natarajan form the perfect bowling attack.
