Big Bash League is just a few months away from its commencement and Sydney Thunder has appointed Usman Khawaja as their skipper for the upcoming edition of Australia’s famous T20 league. In the previous edition, Callum Ferguson led Thunders in BBL. But, team management has handed over the important rule to Aussie internationals.

Usman Khawaja has played 93 international games for Australia across all the formats and scored 4500+ runs with the help of 10 centuries and 26 fifties. He last donned a national jersey during the 2019 World Cup and since then he has been sidelined from the Australian side due to several reasons.

Coming onto BBL, he is one of the known names, who has scored 1718 runs in 57 games. Meanwhile, he also smashed 28 long sixes in the Big Bash League playing for different teams over the course of time. But, now, he is all set to lead Syndey Thunders in the T20 League. Interestingly, Usman Khawaja is the all-time leading run-scorer of Sydney Thunder with 1,380 runs. And, who can forget his performance of BBL 05 when he managed a total of 345 runs in just 4 games and played a crucial role in making Sydney Thunders champions of Big Bash League

Usman Khawaja looked really happy about taking the charge of the team. In a statement released by Sydney Thunder, the southpaw said that it is an honor for him to lead Thunders in the upcoming edition of Big Bash League 2021-22. Khawaja added that he has an old and heart-to-heart connection with Western Sydney and leading Thunders will be a big thing for him.

“It’s a great privilege to be captain of any team, but for me especially being captain of Sydney Thunder probably means a little more. I grew up in Western Sydney, about ten minutes from where the Thunder play at Sydney Showground Stadium, and even though I now live in Queensland I have never forgotten where I come from.

“The majority of my close friends are from Western Sydney and I have that strong emotional connection with the club and the region. It’s very close to my heart,” said Khwaja as quoted by Sydney Thunder’s official website.
